The University of Sydney (NSW) was named one of the top 50 universities in Australia by the Guardian, a daily magazine based in New York.
The magazine says it has been ranked in the top 20 universities worldwide by the number of international students, the number enrolled in its Bachelor of Science (BS) degree and the number employed in the Australian economy.
The university is also ranked first in the US for research output and second in the UK for its total faculty.
The top-ranked Australian university is the University of Queensland in Brisbane, the publication says.
Professor Alan Mould, the university’s head of the Faculty of Education, said the university was proud to be ranked among the top 10 in the World University Rankings.
“The success of our research, the development of new technologies, the quality of our curriculum, the impact of our education and our students and staff on the Australian and global economy has seen us ranked among a number of the world’s best,” he said.
“We’re grateful for our support of the Government of Queensland and our international colleagues, which is a source of pride for our university.”
The University of New South Wales (NSFW) is ranked fourth in the global ranking of world universities.
The University in Sydney said it was proud of its achievements in teaching and research.
“In an increasingly globalised world, we must work together to achieve more for all our students, staff and community members,” a statement said.
Professor John O’Connor, the chair of the School of Public Health at the university, said universities were important for students and society.
“Students are well placed to access the world of science and technology, and research is the backbone of any economy,” he told AAP.
“But there are also serious health risks associated with prolonged exposure to air pollution, so we all have a responsibility to take immediate action to address these issues.”
